Goodreads Synopsis
A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.

After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.

The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister's. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval...the games have only just begun.

Review
Legendary is the second installment of the Caraval series, and this time, we see Scarlett and Donatella explore the world outside their island, and discover that the tales they were taught as children may just be true. Tella wrote to Legend in order to save Scarlett from being forced to marry, but because of some mistakes she's made since the Caraval ended, she is now indebted to the fate Jacks, Prince of Hearts, and has to deliver Legend's real name, or she will die. But Tella's issue is that while she plays the new Caraval, she soon finds herself torn between discovering just what happened to her mother, and her feelings for Jacks and for Dante - who is more than meets the eye.

Now, I'm going to say that I definitely dropped the ball with this series. I read Caraval way back before it's release, being lucky enough to be given an ARC of it, and really enjoyed it at the time. However, I think the hype took over a little too much, so when the sequels were released, I wasn't too enthusiastic about reading them. But when I was approved for an ARC of Once Upon a Broken Heart, and released it was related to the Caraval series, I knew I needed to finish it off, and luckily my library had copies I could check out. I found myself having to think about what had happened in Caraval a lot to understand this book, but really liked Tella, a lot more than I had in book 1. Though Scarlett and Julian both appear in this book, they take a somewhat secondary role to Tella's story, and I think that was right for the plot line. The added element of magic in the Deck of Destiny, on top of Legend's magic, really added to the fantastical aspect of the book, and kept me entertained until the end. I am really happy I had a copy of Finale to read once I'd finished this, as the ending was a definite cliffhanger! An enjoyable sophomore book by Garber.
