Goodreads Summary
From acclaimed author Mindee Arnett comes the thrilling conclusion of the stunningly epic, action-packed, and romantic fantasy adventure about a powerful girl possessed of strange magic, the outcast prince she loves, and the kingdom that has torn them apart.

Kate and Corwin are on the run, desperate for allies in a new world of war among the kingdoms of Rime. As the book opens, Kate suffers a massive loss, one that will shape the struggle for freedom of all wilders and magic folk—that is, if Kate can learn to control her own power.

Review

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. This in no way impacted on my view.

I adored Onyx & Ivory and knew that as soon as I could, I had to get a copy of book 2, and I was not disappointed in the finale to this fantastic duology. Now that Kate and Corwin have dealt with their previous issues, and the anguish of the last book, they are fighting together as the Wilder Queen and the rightful King. However, after a disastrous prologue, they are separated again, with Corwin presumed dead. For most of the book, both characters have their own story lines, with Corwin being first as prisoner/slave in the mines, and later a prisoner in the Seva court, engaged to, and forced to marry the Sevan princess. Kate, on the other hand, is leading the resistance once more. Trying to unite the other wilders left in hiding across Rime, it is up to Kate to stop Edwin's rule, and the magic that is slowly destroying their world. I loved each character's individual plot lines, and how when they joined together, the tensions off their time apart weren't just glossed over. There were real issues, and just because both characters loved each other, didn't mean that everything was hunky-dory again. In fact, the tension between the two of them made everything even more better.

The story line with the goddess, and the return to the Uror Trials was fantastic, as I had hated how that had been left in book 1. Some things did feel like they happened a bit too quickly, but it was only afterwards that I thought that, not at the time. However, I felt like the secondary characters we had met and love in Onyx & Ivory were a little lacklustre in this book, but, still, I loved the book. This was the first series I've read by Mindee, and I definitely think I'll be trying some of her others in the future.
